Southfields is located between Wimbledon and Putney. It is within the Wandsworth Borough, bordered by the River Thames to the north, Wandsworth Common to the east, Burntwood Lane to the south and King Georges Park to the West.
Southfields takes its name from its rural period, when it was known as the south field of the Manor of Dunsford. It remained rural long after neighbouring Wimbledon and Putney had begun to develop and stayed that way until what is now, the district line tube station, opened in 1889. This encouraged growth in the area and in 1890 the first school opened on Merton Road. It now has a population, according to the 2001 Census, of approximately 14,067.
The main area of Southfields comprises typical Victorian terraces, laid out in a "grid"pattern (in between Replingham Road in the north, and Ryfold Road in the south). Many of these streets remain as individual houses (such as the majority on Clonmore Street), though some have now been converted into flats (such as Lavenham Road).
Transport:
The A3 trunk road runs south west towards Portsmouth and north east into central London. The district is bounded by A218 (Merton Road) to the east and the A219 (Parkside Avenue) to the west.
Southfields is serviced by bus routes 39 (Clapham Junction to Putney Bridge) and the 493 (Tooting Broadway to Richmond).
Located in Zone 3 of the Travelcard system, of the London Underground network, Southfields Tube Station is in between East Putney and Wimbledon Park on the District Line. Southfields is the main London Underground station for the Wimbledon Tennis Championship.
Nearest National Rail stations are Earlsfield, Wimbledon and Putney.
